What challenges or gaps in care are you focused on?
I strive to bridge the research-practice gap for underserved populations (e.g., LGBTQ+, Women, Military Veterans, Medicaid recipients) through innovative programming that addresses Social Determinants of Health (SDoH), closing care gaps, and health promotion.
What initiatives are you currently spearheading to improve health?
1) I serve as an expert consortium member for HealthyWomen’s “Ready, Healthy, and Able” program which aims to address healthcare disparities through development of research-informed quality Provider training to keep Women Service Members healthy and fit for duty. 2) In collaboration with several in the Transgender and Gender Diverse community, a peer mentoring guidebook titled “TRANSformative Mentoring” is in development to provide peer support materials and resources based upon field best practices. 3) As the Senior Clinical Director of Utilization Review at a Managed Care Organization (BH-MCO), I am regularly involved in systemic initiatives that strive to optimize healthcare access, utilization, engagement, and community wellbeing.
What necessary collaborations/partnerships have you established within and/or outside of your organization in developing your initiatives?
Strategic partnerships are essential for developing and disseminating healthcare initiatives across systems. My initiatives prioritize elevating the voice of the community by seeking early and regular input from members. I have a history of strong collaborations across government systems, Veteran Service Organizations, Provider networks, and non-profit organizations.
What is your measurement criteria for success/or current measurable improvements have you realized from the initiative?
Success is measured through objective (e.g., standardized assessment scores, cost savings) and subjective (e.g., qualitative data, user satisfaction) metrics that guide each initiative. For example, the “TRANSformative Mentoring” project will involve tracking of loneliness scales, level of community involvement, and degree of perceived benefit from the peer-led service.
What gives your hope for the future in health care?
Health equity is an admirable goal, and a worthy pursuit. While there’s much that remains to be done to achieve culturally-informed and inclusive systems, there has been substantial progress in recent years. Every time an individual receives quality healthcare as their authentic self, I have hope for the future.
