What is the top challenge or obstacle facing healthcare today?
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. (American Cancer Society, 2022). The cost of cancer continues to soar and is expected to surpass $240B by 2030 (CDC, 2023).
Cancer diagnoses for people under 50, now referred to as “the early-onset cancer epidemic”, have increased by nearly 80% globally over the past 30 years (BMJ Oncology, 2023).
Cancer recently surpassed musculoskeletal conditions as the number one driver of healthcare costs for large employers. And employers are seeing an increased prevalence of late-stage cancers among their workforce (Business Group on Health, 2022).
Escalating costs and increased incidence have created an urgent demand for equitable access to screening and prevention measures, cancer expertise, support, and guidance for people, wherever they are.
How do you think stakeholders can bring care closer to consumers/patients?
Geography should not be a barrier to accessing cancer care and support. Virtual care surged during the pandemic without compromising quality, and patient satisfaction was positive (JAMA, 2022). The evidence suggests that tele-oncology is a sustainable solution that should continue well into the future. There are numerous oncology services that can be provided virtually: expert medical opinions, follow-up visits, symptom and medication management, as well as navigation and ongoing psychosocial support to name a few.
